more of my art found in current publications

i know i mentioned that my article and art entitled "colors of vintage" (pages 6-8) is out now in a magazine called somerset studio gallery (top pic here).  but what i didn't know until today, not until i was perusing this magazine that i had 2 more pages of my work "spotlighted" entitled "not overdue" (pgs 176-177) featuring 6 canvases i did of men in cone hats where i included the business stamp "this account is overdue" on some of them.
and also i found (no one tells me these things, i find them out eventually) i had a page in somerset stamper's sampler magazine (p. 23) of dancing women i turned in for my artist on call work.

i think there is one magazine out there currently with more of my artist on call work.  i had a glance of the "unusual suspects" work somewhere.
i will try to hunt it down and show you here.

not doubt about it, it's a real nice feeling to have so much work published these days that i have to chase it around to show you.  i don't even know where my work comes up anymore.

about a year ago, (or so) i had counted up the number of times my artwork and my articles had been published and the number back then was over 50.
i don't think i will count anymore - except to count my blessings.

best seafood in san diego

we just had an awesome lunch at this place on ashton st.  just off morena in bay park, san diego.

we had a killer ceviche cocktail that was full of plump white fish, fresh, fresh - with some cilantro and jalapeno, etc.  it had a little kick.  the ceviche had a great light flavored chip with it.  i would have loved to se my friend's Whales Tails chips (certain % goes to whale conservation) there, they taste great.....maybe one day.

also i had a cup of  white clam chowder,  that had more clams than cream.  we had a pinot gris that made it even BETTER.  its open everyday from 11 - 9 p.m.  i think we are going again tomorrow for lunch.  they also sell fresh fish at the counter.

XXXXXXXXXX

later tonight we celebrated my daughter brooke's 32 birthday at la boca, argentinean restaurant in little italy, san diego.  it was fun and high spirited.  but,  OK now i have had too much restaurant food (although delicious) and too much wine - ditto on delicious and now i feel  like puking.

we bought some italian cookies to take home and the dog ate them.  i think we will both (dempsey the dog and me) be upchucking later tonight.  ooooooo.  i need alka seltzer...bbblah oooouu.

damn dog.

face and hair, demo

remember my objective here: it is to make a photo look like a painting, not make a painting look like a photo.
so examining first the face, i have washed over the face with a warm fleshtone, making sure the lightest colors are where the light hits: a small area on the forehead, the nose, upper lip and a bit on the chin. i also lightened some color on her neck. the affect of the fleshtone paint is to flatten the image and create shapes - to take away the subtle shading and replace it with flat colors. in everything i have added a touch of the magenta that i have place all around her, like in the surrounding pillows. the magenta tint is the makes up or establishes the color "atmosphere" of the painting.
next i create the hair. i see the hair as 3 tones. dark, midtone and light. for the darkest area i use a grayed purple. the grayed purple is not as dark as the tone in the photo, but it works fine with the already created "atmosphere". the highlight i use a bright yellow. yellow and purple are not pretty together (my opinion), so i blend the two together to create a warm grayed purple. although this is not a color of natural hair, the colors suit the magenta "atmosphere" and therefore works visually with the painting. not my favorite color, but will work well with the whole of the colors.

step 2, laying in atmospheric colors.....

a continued step-out form sunday's post...
i begin to paint in colors that surround the subject person.

i get asked if this should be photocopied first. i don't always photocopy first. i just rip the image right out of the magazine and get to work. i don't bother prepping the magazine image with mediums or varnish. for my purposes, its only a drill, so i am not too worried about paint scratching off to quickly. of course sometimes, or often times, these painted magazine images are so cool they end up stretched and placed on a canvas and placed for sell in my gallery. i always finish my work by applying UV protection and skid proof sealant or varnish. this assures the colorfastness of my work and assured durability of the piece over time.

so here you see how i begin by simply placing in color. the image, while still in the magazine, was in more of a yellow tone ( a lovely tone) but i have done so many paintings in yellow lately, that i thought i would go for a different, cooler look - so i began by painting in a cool magenta. i painted other similar colors in, but i was sure blend in the cool magenta to the other pinks, to keep the overall look of the piece consistent.

also, i put down color around her face first - on the surrounding pillows and then in her dress. next, i begin to paint her face. it is easier to paint the face after the surrounding colors are in because it sets the "glow". i will blend a bit of the surrounding colors (magentas) in her fleshtone to keep the look of her face consistent with the atmospheric colors.

just finished this book.....

the first book i read on my new Kindle. trouble is, i can't pass the book on like i would a paperback...its trapped inside my Kindle. and now what should i do? delete it? store it eternally? i don;t want to pay for it again. and by the way, purchasing paperback novels on Kindles are not much cheaper than buying them at target or wherever.

about this book:
it was a good book, kinda meandered a bit, but i liked it. the first 1/4 of the book (or so) centers around the colorado's columbine high school massacre....then drifts into the rest of the lead character's life and psyche. interesting how wally lamb interweaves facts with fiction. it leaves a bit of an impression.

how to begin...........

i have selected a magazine picture that centers upon a big face. faces can be intimidating to paint. the first step is to tear it out and lay it flat on your work space. next sand the face lightly so that it will accept paint - if you don't then the paint will bead up and roll off, making color blending (a very important process) a real hell.
i will continue with more steps in the future........i will show the next steps tomorrow.
(sorry about the blurry pics)

check out first place....

another school record broken! (ok it was the 33 year old record she broke on thursday - she merely broke her own record today).
this was heat one of 200 yards individual medley (2 lengths of each stroke in one race).
she got 6th overall (qualified 8th).
in her 100 breast stroke - she broke the school record again (same thing, she broke it thursday and today swam faster and broke her own record), she qualified 4th and finished 4th.
so ends her freshman CIFs. now she will go back to club swimming until next high school swim season.

in the top photo is the finish of her race. the second pic is her butterfly (stroke)- she is wearing a white cap. the last pic is of the scoreboard if you click on it you will read her name as first!
ask me how proud i am. and i am going to have a drink to this race, believe me! cheers.

what do these publications have in common?

these are just a few publications i am in - somerset weddings - that' my work on the cover!

champion rosie!

(pictured: gastone, my husband/ rosie's dad and rosie---- and random unknowns)
OK OK i know i am one big fat braggart,(i never pass up a chance to brag) and i know i am going too far with this -- i am sure i am driving everyone crazy, but damn it, rosie did a great job at the CIF prelims today. cousin fred, listen to this:
rosie is only a freshman, age 14! she broke two high school records. one of the records was 33 years old (for 200 yard IM - individual medley) and again in 100 yard breaststroke. she qualified 4th in breast and 8th in 200 IM. remember this is southern CA where all swimmers are exceptionally fast...., so this is a big deal.

especially to our family.
so excuse me while i brag about one of my kids--my face is beaming so bright tonight, someone could probably borrow it to fix a car engine at midnight. er....... (don't ask me, im drunk from celebrating).

the finals are saturday afternoon (2 p.m.) at rancho bernardo high school - come everyone who wants to cheer my baby on..
200 yd. IM time 2: 14.49
100 yd. breast time: 1:08.89

matte medium on paper.....

here i am getting ready to do a small series on paper using matte medium.
i have already brushed these globs into the paper on both side. next i will stain them with fluid acrylics, probably using earth tones like burnt umber, from there, i plan on building with more colors before i proceed with images. this is a change up for me because usually i work on (larger) canvases with only two colors for the back ground. i generally keep everything very simple - but for today, i think i will play for a while with different colors and see what happens. why not? its only paper.

in between time, i will create a couple of bridal rip-outs (rip-outs= torn straight out of the magazine) and finish my 1940's swim suit canvases. and, oh yeah - do the laundry.

later today rosie swims her first CIF swim meet. we are excited to see her swim - she is so nervous.

all in a line.....

these are three of 4 canvases that are going to be home for some mid century bathing beauties. i work in series-es, if that is a word. i doubt that is a word. i love to line up canvases and work in the same style of 4 or 5 even 6 at a time. since i work very fast, it makes sense for me to approach my work this way. i can rapidly work one after the other - creating a cohesiveness to the pieces. why do i work this way? i don;t really know, i have just evolved this way. i think it all has something to do with laziness and short attention span.

*******

so, tomorrow another full day's work tomorrow with artist claire-lise anderegg at my house. i do enjoy our workdays together. we are learning a lot about each other's work and work styles. hopefully, in the end, we will do a wonderful collaborative that everyone will enjoy.
also, i spent the better part of yesterday and today with my great art buddy, kathy olsen. she got a bee in her bonnet about the state of her garage and work studio, so we cleared out boxes and boxes of crafts that she says she does not want anymore. i couldn't see her throwing them in the trash so i took them to put in my already full garage.

so, what does this mean? this means that i HAVE GOT TO organize a craft garage sale. this will take some doing. i have said many times in the past that i ought to do this, but now there is no turning back. stay tuned for the date.

*******

OK american idol: so sorry to see season 8 come to a close. i think adam will win - he is massively talented and from san diego. and this will make my dear cousin fred happy since he picked adam from the start.
however, i must say that chris has turned me around. i was saying all throughout this season that he should be thrown off - but this has changed for me. i really like his beatnik style - his soft, feeling voice, his many music talents - he plays about every instrument, i think. adam is adam, but chris is a lot more than just chris - he has talent in many ways - singing, playing re-writing music, making old songs his own -every time. if that makes sense.
so we shall see.

work space

yeah, i know. i really should work in my workroom instead of the dining room table. but dang, i like it here. i have some cheap-ass paints on my table right now - see? but its because i am not at this moment painting anything for sell or show, instead i am experimenting with techniques for publication. that is one great thing about publishing. no need for expensive canvases or large assemblages, in fact, work on paper is fine - if it is done right. also, no need to worry about adding wires for hanging or no worry about minding specifications like no saw tooth hangers or worry about framing specifications like only use plexiglass - no glass allowed (in frames).

just do a nice job on any support and that's all it takes.
recently i have been experimenting with stains on thin red cedar in the automatic paintings style i did a couple of weeks ago. i will share them tomorrow. for now, good night.

oh and family news - rosie broke all her best times today in high school league finals- she placed 2nd in 500 yd. free (5:28) and 3rd in 200 im (2:21) and she did a 100 free split on her relay of 57.30 and she is only a freshman. awesome swim - hear this cousin kim? (cousin kim is a great swimmer too and a swim coach in kalamazoo).

another photo of it.

here is another photo of the finished piece of paper. still blurry because i can't seem to hold my hand steady - (i need sleep) i took this pic in the morning, trouble is you can now see the wrinkles in the paper and makes my brother's head look funny.
what i will do next is adhere the paper to a canvas or canvas board. i do this by pouring a 1/2 dollar size amount of matte medium onto the canvas and spread it out with a "bright" shaped 1" broad paintbrush. then flip over the painted paper and throughly coat the back with matte medium as well. then comes the finesse. when i lay the paper to the wet canvas - i makes sure it is centered, i flatten it with my hands, then start smoothinig out from the center to the edges with the (same) brush. i never, ever use foam brushes. they just would not work for this.
the smoothing process takes some time. i have to let it sit near me for 5, 10, 15 minutes watching it to see if bubbles well up. if they do, i gently lift the image and re- apply medium, if needed and do the "center to edge" smoothing process again. it is worth the effort.

those paintings on magazine pages that i did last week--- i put on them canvas - all of them are at my little gallery now (262 east grand, escondido, CA), priced at $100 each . hope this helps.
