max, downtown san diego, 1949

it was just another time, wasn't it?  my oldest daughter keeps asking me if times were better say, 30 years ago, before cyberspace and personal devices.  were people happier?
i love nostalgia so of course i have to say yes, it was better.  well not better, just a happier time.
course i was not alive during 1949, let's do the math - 61 years ago - but just look at this picture.  my dad all dressed up to go downtown.  (actually he might have had an interview at the "journal" newspaper.  the building stands behind him.  he later came to own his own newspapers locally, but at this time he was new to the town).
still, he would dress up to drive.  this is true.  i have a photo of him dressed up to go on a sunday drive to visit the desert.

dressing up doesn't necessarily make one happy.
in those days, people had more disposable income as a whole.   that usually makes people at least think they are happier.
they had fewer worries.  at least back then they weren't getting ripped of by spammers from Nigeria.   or bugged to death by phone solicitations (although these are fewer nowadays - we did go through years of hassle before they were made illegal, didn't we?) or deafened by urban weed blowers.  they weren't annoyed while trying to go to their local supermarket by people begging for money for questionable organizations.
they didn't have to worry that their car might speed out of control on the freeway because of a factory defect, or have the aggravation of fighting their own bank regarding outrageous and spurious credit card fines and charges because, well, there were no credit cards back then (in 1949).
i suspect the upcoming generation is significantly lonelier.  30 years ago we would have laughed at dating services to find the perfect "one".  i know of plenty of folks who actually can't get a date from eharmony.  apparently it is not so unusual to get the notice "sorry there are no matches at this time, please try again later".   imagine that.  sad lonely times.

what do you think?
this sunday i think i will get dressed up and drive to the desert.  maybe i will even wear a hat.

today at the psychic fair....

i had my aura read.  this is a photo of my aura.  i am surrounded by lots of colors which is a bit unusual.  predominately i am encased in turquoise which means i am a practical,  compassionate soothing guide.  i like that - however the red at my throat and chest is an indication of my outward personality - my throat - how i express myself outwardly - and it means i am a blunt person!  hmmm, i admit i am a Sagittarius.  the area above my head which is interestingly divided in half - represents on the right - my outward masculine side - the personality i project outwardly - yellow means cheerful, red athletic, orange creative and green is dedicated.  blue is expressiveness and straight above my head is a diffused white spot.  this is my "guide"  someone is watching out for me.  it is divine energy and channeling.  i think that is very exciting.  everyone should have one.  lord knows i have enough deaths in my family to have one or two of them looking over my shoulder - hi mom!
my daughter rosie had hers done too.  hers was almost solid red.  which means among other things she is competitive, intense, dependable and trustworthy.
The last thing the psychic said he noticed from my aura was that i was about to purchase a new pair of shoes.  wow!  that sure seemed random.  i wasn't think of getting new shoes, but maybe i should.
ah nah, sometimes psychic are just wrong.  i rather just believe in the bigger picture - the guiding angel thats above my head for instance.
the psychic fair is once a month at mystic isle.  i like to go about twice a year.

hey wait a minute---this aura photo makes my nose look huge!

helix charter high school yearbook......2010

i wasn't going to post this but then - how could i not?

my daughter, rosie, is just finishing her sophomore year at helix charter high school.  helix has had lots of trouble and terrible press in the recent years regarding teachers being accused/ convicted of  having sex with their students and other similar trash.  one way helix combated all this bad press was to regularly make public announcements regarding the extremely high test results its overall student body achieves year after year-- getting better each year.   my daughter is one of the top students in her class, i am very proud to say.  and its true,  helix students do test higher than the other high schools in its district as a whole.  (no she was not one of the molested ones, BTW - and get your mind out of the gutter regarding my daughter,  please).
anyway, i always asked what does "teachers having sex with their students" have to do with the overall school anyway?  and what about these high test scores?   the district was threatening to remove the charter (or i should say, voted to remove the charter) because of the sex issues while disregarding all together the high test scores.   the district mixes (d) apples with oranges.

the remedy: to recover the charter from being disallowed, the principal decided to throw himself on the spear and take early retirement - he was the sacrificial lamb.  this move indeed did save the charter.   but it didn't make a lick of sense to me.    but that IS how it came down.  we lost Dr. Smith to early retirement - yes, that's football player's alex smith's dad-- because of the sex scandals  - not his own, BTW.   to me,  it is truly random to ask dr. smith to step down in order to to save the charter.  i really can't comprehend this move at all.

  but what about the yearbook?
my daughter was mortified when she got her yearbook yesterday - can you see what's wrong with the cover?
not only did this tiny (?) humility make its scene, there were other huge errors as well - for instance,   somehow the yearbook staff forgot to mention/include sophomore students whose last names beginning with the letters M, N or O.
so what is wrong with the yearbook cover?  clue to the cover....how do YOU spell school?  it's not a joke.  they did not mean it to be s'cool.   that would have been clever.
the high school that gets the top testing scores in the district.....hmmm, i think the district has bigger problems than to attack helix's charter based on teachers' malbehavior-they  better examine how the other high schoool students spell "school", etc.
