so this week....

(family news catch up)
my daughter brooke was accepted into UCSD with a full ride (except housing).  she is thrilled and relieved and happy all at once.  me too.  i'm so happy for her because i know how much she wanted this and i know she will be an even greater contributor to our general culture and humanity one day soon.  she is studying linguistics - i know she will do important research papers and writings, probably lectures.  she is a great investigator anyway with all the work she has done in international news for the past 10 years.  can't do too much better than that for prep work.
next week is her birthday - i will engage in merriment with her at her local pub.   it will be nice.

my son jamie is visiting from buffalo, NY (who has a full ride plus salary).  he studies and writes in the area of literature and psychology.   or the study of psychology found in/through literature   it seems to me a bit of a quirky combo, but, turns out it's very interesting.   he told me he doesn't always like snow.  and sometimes he even yells at it. (then he gave me a cheeky smile - he grew up on monty python humor) but he is better now that he bought snow boots.  i hope they don't look like the ones napoleon dynamite wore and danced in.  jamie also informed me that there is an apparent fashion code for how long into the warmer months you should wear them.  this might sound obvious to those of you who did not grow up in southern california.
rosie swam her CIF - high school championships today-- she  placed 7th and 9th in her individual events.  not exactly what she hoped for but better than a poke in the eye.  she did her best times of the year - but last year she was faster and that part made her steaming mad.  there's always a good lesson in not quite achieving your sought after goal.  only makes you more determined.  and then of course you appreciate the sweetness of success even more.  those days should be cherished.  sometimes we don't stop and bask enough.  that aside,  she did look beautiful in her long race swimsuit - it has nice pink stitch.

i learned from a high school art student who came here at the studio on friday to intern with me - about "streaming" tv.  so i tried it last night.  it was cool.  its at www.justin.tv.com  (as in "...this just in...", you know, like a news flash).  anyway,  i think you have to sign up for a free membership in order to watch it.  i don't know how to work the audio yet.  just practicing for the big day when i go online with my workshops.  one day.  one day soon.  i keep saying.  but really one day soon.

also, interestingly, i have had a lot of offers outside my town to do workshops.  for instance there's: washington state (an island), france, italy, greek isle, canada island, chicago, new york, alaska, barcelona, and a cruise (maybe).  i have a hard time saying no, but i will to most of them  for now because i need to be here for rosie.  i don't want to be an absent mom.  when she graduates in 2 years -  i will travel and teach, gastone will come - it will be fun and something to look forward to when we get empty nest sadness.

and for you....art opportunity: if you are on facebook - check out my fanpage @ lisa bebi art.  there is a challenge that just started:  create something orange that's 4" x 4".  doesn't have to be a painting.  deadline for jpeg submission is june 14 midnight PST.
just send the jpeg to my email address lisabebiart@aol.com.   the prize is one of my paintings on june 16th.   good luck.

family paintover class.......

first, i explained dealing with backgrounds and shading clothing.....this is a demo on photcopy paper.  this is a simple approach.

then a 2 minute paintover - showing ways to disguise cut edges and introducing background color into subjects, or center of interest.  and a wee bit of stamping.  more painterly and abstract - but, also a more complex approach.

st. lucia...made into an icon

a workshop i will be co-teaching with colette george, author if "fresh ideas in decoupage".  we will be creating a paintover and then incorporate them into a wooden icon called "see yourself sainted".  the idea initially was to pertray ourselves on the textured wood panels.  but as time went on, glam images were much more interesting.  so these saints are still us, but exsist only in our alter ego form.

my children on mother's day.....

this is the sweet card i woke up to this morning from my rosie.  i love the frufru.  she wished me a hardy happy mother's day.
my other daughter, brooke will come over for dinner tonight, but she invited me to the gatorfest today - it was a happening on the beach with lots of zydeco music and dancing and drinking.  just my kinda thing when i am feeling peppy... but i wasn't today so i declined.  she also already gave me a cool necklace with a charm of a painter's palette.  i'm wearing it.

my son sent me sweet sentiments from buffalo, new york.

Dear Mother--- A genuine Happy Mother's Day from your son who loves you and is immeasurably grateful for your continued existence on this earth. XOXOXOX

this made me cry.  so sweet and he remembers he (well, everyone) nearly lost me to a losing battle of acute kidney failure in 2003.  fortunately chemo saved my life.  he also feels this way because  when he was a tender one year old, he lost his dad to a heart attack.  lots of reasons to feel thankful for the simple things in life - like, life itself.
my husband has been busy in the kitchen preparing  italian goodness - his mom's recipe.  smells wonderful.

i hope all of you have a wonderful mother's day whether you are a mom or someone born to one........its a nice day to pause and reflect.  and be thankful.

swimming with my neighbor....

my 4 year old neighbor came over today for a little swim.  i thought the water was too cold, but she didn't.  i just dangled my feet in it.  she did too, then she decided to brave the first step, standing. the water went to her shins.  she told me she thought it was cold, but that it was getting warmer.  hmmm, i thought dangling my feet would be good enough for me.  she said, ok and to suit myself.
then, she lowered herself to the second step, her little two piece swim skirt bloomed out in the water encircling and delighting her.  she was a blue and white striped flower.  this happy sight made her squeal with delightfulness.   she got so happy she decided to skip along the second step back and forth and back and forth again.  once she was hopping on one foot, next she was jumping in big leaps.  after that she did big swoony dips and broke into song.  i am pretty sure she was making up the song as she went.  pure happy expression.   this lead her to showing me how to do   "sasheys" - uhm she is in ballet class.  it was very petite and pretty.  she told me of her favorite princesses and her favorite princess p.j.s she was going to wear to bed tonight.  she also chatted about the t.v. show dora the explorer and a few other ones i had never heard of.  i listened to her wisdom.
then she got serious and asked me if i thought she could go down one more step - the third step.  the water would come up to her chin.    i thought this over.  then i told her yes, i thought she could do that - i thought she was brave enough.   and so very gently and carefully she lowered herself to the third step.
her eyes were very wide - goosebumps popping up everywhere.  she then tiptoed across the step and then back again - before i knew it she had done it many times and she was singing again.  hopping, leaping, dancing flying - all of it - all on my third step.   she said the water was not cold at all.  but i still only wanted to dangle my feet.  she understood.
next she saved a bug's life.  it caused her pause.  she reflected on the time a bee was in her wading pool and how she scooped it up and it flew away.  she said that she saved it from falling asleep forever and ever and never waking up again.
that was good to know -such a kind soul.  i felt safe with her there.
we chit-chatted about other things - her preschool and her friends, her new puppy and her baby brother.  we talked about my cat and whether she could visit her.  i told her yes.  yes she can.
what's her name? she wanted to know.
"it's miss dior" i told her.
"oh, missss dior", she said as if the name made perfect sense.
so we dried off and went indoors to pet miss dior.  afterwards she felt compelled to draw me a picture.  the one you see here.  it has miss dior and a very beautiful heart and some grass and some random letters.  i asked her what the letters meant - she shrugged, they were just letters.
time to go home.   mom had food ready.
in that half hour i learned so much.  to think that i have been missing all the fun all these years.  i never knew that the key to such absurd happiness lies on our third stair in our big pool.  and the love of miss dior.
what if i went to our third step in the big pool and starting belting out in song and dancing and twirling.  hopping and sasheying.    then what if i felt compelled to shoot into the house to pet the cat and draw a pictures of her and pretty hearts and random letters.
what if i could do that....that would be awesome.  i feel a little jealous of my little friend.   she can do that and she can do something like that everyday and every minute if she wants to.

i would be afraid to be that way now.  someone would put me away.  for good.  i would be marked as the village looney-tune.
but, i feel sure that if she knew that i was afraid and worried that i couldn't do it,  she would probably put her hand gently on my knee and say "yes you can, you can be brave and you can do it too."   and with that, she would give me a big wide grin with all of her teeth showing at once.  cause that's how she does it.

self portrait

looks like summer is about here.  the little girl next door is coming over to swim today, that's how i know.
she is a 4 year old sweetie pie.  she is full of wisdom too.  no doubt i will be collecting a number of insights today.  i will share some of her kernals of knowledge here on my blog.
next week is full of workshops.  (see sidebar here)
the bravo school of art workshops are TECHNIQUE filled - if you are a mixed media artist or a wannabe - those workshops are for you.  the techniques include some of my own, like the paintover,  as well as those more universally known.

if you just want to know how to paint - the michaels workshops are for total beginners.  the price of those workshops at michaels is $48.  there is a kit you can purchase for $50 -- use your 40% off coupon - then a couple of other small tubes of paint and you are set to go.  you will have enough in the kit to paint 2 wonderful paintings and even more.
the michaels workshops are very easy and low key,  don't let fear stop you from enjoying a new skill.

ok, i hope the sun comes out before 2 p.m.  so that i  can enjoy my swim today with little missy.

bunny lovers.......

who doesn't love bunnies?

original painting, original image from a vintage German postcard - i couldn't help but paint these two while thinking about animal rescue lately.
the card was an easter greeting.  i decided not t include everything on the old postcard - just the the young'uns dressed in bunny hats was just too cute and funny too.
