more fish play

i did these little collagey, watery fish by using spray mist inks and then stamping using fred b. mullett stamps.
the key is to use colors that look good together and to only stamp a portion of the stamp, not the whole thing - otherwise it would look flat instead of swimmingly.......
top one i used blakc ink for the fish stamp, the bottom i used white.
you can reach fred - fredb@fredbmullett.com or visit his web:  www.fredbmullett.com for cool nature stamps

tomorrow is another day.....

i'm excited to teach my journaling workshop tomorrow morning and in the evening i get to do a demo for Ramona Art Guild.  what a great day - can't wait.
tonight i went to the Bard Hall Art Guild and we did ATCs and had a wonderful round table talk about them.  but something was bugging me.
Its that i am missing Tony Cuban.  Tony was maybe not my best friend but a man i liked and sat next to on many evenings at Bard Hall.  he was quiet and well mannered man who sat with his arms propped and steadied on his cane.  he listened to everyone with a slight smile on his face - a welcoming face.  he would share his art  and say he only did art to please himself but if someone else got enjoyment out of his work that was even better.   he often had a comical point of view that he also loved to share.   and he had his own poetry which he shared at poetry slams.
well, even though i disagree with god, god went ahead and decided it was time to take tony home.  well, i miss him and feel cheated that he won't be part of our circle anymore.  so (reluctantly)goodbye dear tony - we will really miss you.  but, thank you for leaving behind lots of art for us to enjoy and ponder.

a piece of rosin paper......

this is the other side of yesterday's post.  sometimes dull colors help bring out the jewel like colors.

Friday, February 12, 2010

half page rosin sheet

it is very liberating to paint on a large sheet of paper - especially without really thinking much about it first.  this is the same as the last post only this painting has the full width of the sheet of art which includes the two birds on a twig.

the days are long.......

not too particularly happy about spending the next third days solid at a swim meet.  but thats what it is all about for our family these days.  soon this will pass, then starts high school swim.   which means, even more swim meets.   my days seemingly getting  longer and longer.

collage, acrylic and graphite on folded rosin paper.

journaling workshop next week

i am teaching an oversized art journal class at the Stamp Addict, wednesday feb. 17 from 10:30 - 1:30.  www.thestampaddict.com
i provide everything to "play" with.  we take a large 35" x 25" piece of rosen paper, gesso it and then fold it 8 ways (see above).  i will lead you through a total fantasy of dreamy and awesome techniques that you have never experienced before.   how do i know? - well, because i made some up!
here, i did three journals.  each one has a theme.  the top two are from a "birds" theme, the next 2 are from  sheer abstract theme and the final 2 are from pics of my daughter "rosie".  i will help you chose a theme and teach you how to make your journal cohesive and interesting.  I think you might cherish it forever.sorry about the bad photos and the shiny glare.  they are much prettier in person. Look at my little fairy angel here in her mystical garden.
i am attempting to do a demo video - i will post it here when i figure it out.  but learning to edit and upload videos is not that easy for me.  still learning.

headband rack....

i don't know why i feel compelled to show this, but this is one of my headband racks.  i like to have them (headbands not racks, necessarily) in all colors.  this rack is hanging on the wall of one of my bathrooms.

collage sheet art transferred to cloth....

just like yesterday's post (see pervious post + one), i used the same method and took the image from a purchased collage and transferred it to unbleached muslin - cotton.  it has a nice lighter - than - original color effect - sort of dreamy.
i wrote a two page article about how this is done in the last Art Quilting Studio magazine, if you would like to know more.  www.stampington.com  click publications.

patron saints project......

i have been involved in a year long collaborative project called Patron Saints.  we each (12 of us) took a saint and created a book to hold other saints inside.   our own saint is on the outside of our book.  my saint was saint rita.   we were to take the attributes of the given saints and come up with a piece using our own style, interpretations and sensitivities.
anyway, this is st. jerome: a scholar, an elderly man and also the description of  the myth of st. jerome taking the sliver our of the lion's paw.
i hope you can see my depiction here of the older man studying in his bed, the obvious lion above him and always the dove of peace.
this piece will go inside laurie mika's patron saint book.

art quilt made easy, water transfer to cloth ....

first i painted a magazine tear out.
then i copy it to photopaper,
then i put wet cloth on top and use a paint brush to brush the water on and burnish,

transfers,
dries and sewn into a quilt.the fabric used is bleached white muslin - it looks crisp doesn't it?  i don't know why that is.  but i like it.

article in advanced issue of Apronology

i just got my advanced issue in the mail today.  i am on page 80-82.the article is about taking tea towels  - like these cuties i saw at Anthropologie and creating an apron from them.  the bib part of the apron is my art that i copied then used my water transfer method that was featured in the last Somerset Art Quilting Studio.
i hope you enjoy the magazine.
All the aprons inside this magazine look like they were really taken to the next Apronology level.
good job everyone.

swim team friends....

from left to right, meagan cunningham, clare curran, rosie (my daughter) bebi and the boy's name is lucas willis.  this pic was taken at the Golden Wave's award's ceremony in november, 2009.  i think rosie misses her friends on the old team at times.
aw, they see each other at meets, at least.  those were a lot of years together -rosie was on this team for 7 years.
but now she more than loves her new team.

******** tomorrow i will try to film a workshop!  it will be my first attempt.

damn those kids.......

all i wanted for xmas was a nice family pic with my kids.  and look what they do!  my daughters both have hypnotic powers with those eyes.  my poor son was losing patience.  er, probably past it.  i don't know what my excuse is.

my introduction to Fred B. Mullett.....

today i had the honor of interviewing artist and rubber stamp designer Fred B. Mullett.  yes that is his real name.  he started his rubber stamp business back in the late 1990's and has never looked back.  most his images are produced through an ancient art form called gyotaku --- or fish rubbings.  he has many interesting techniques.  see his site www.fredbmullett.com.  i will be submitting this article to somerset magazine next week.

demo piece......

this is another one of my demo pieces that i slapped out.  oops, oh, ok, i created in a few seconds a couple of years ago.
i was commenting that its fun to take an image from a modern magazine and combine it with an old vintage picture.  here i took the highboy from a magazine... albeit, an older style of chest of drawers, then  combined it with the old lady.  i'm not sure where i got the image now.  i think it was one from one of my commissioner's photo album.  she gve me permission to use it.
it is a sheer co-incidence that the vintage lady looks an awful lot like singer susan boyle.   i guess vintage lady must be susan's double.  even her body size too.
nevertheless, it is a fun piece - try it.
again, the cone hat, i know.   its a very old joke now, but one that is hard to stop doing.
