Max in Green Pants......

well thinking past valentine's day on to st. patrick's day - i have painting here of my dad, Max.  but on St. Patrick's day he is known as  Patty O'Furniture.   i created this little piece on the fly during a demo a couple of years ago.  still, it is my dad.  i just loved him.
don't get me wrong, i have not given up on st. valentine's day.  in fact i will have a load of affordable valentine's painting for your loved one on sale at my next show,  at the second saturday event in escondido in my own little gallery space. see sidebar.

if you are wondering if you should take my workshop on monday - i say, yes!  i will have a load of new techniques you have not thought of.  although we are doing the book shape again like last time, it will be filled with new techniques.  call the stamp addict for your reservation.  again see sidebar (scroll down)  www.thestampaddict.com

book of techniques workshop, monday morning.....

Monday morning, Feb. 1 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Techniques workshop
The Stamp Addict, San Diego, CA
(619)  667-5060

All supplies are included in the price including the book.   $65
you must reserve your spot before class.

You will learn fun techniques in collage, stamping, resists, transfers, bleach technique, doodling, scoring, painting and more.  At the end of the workshop take home your book of techniques.  I have been calling this a journal class but really its a class about techniques.   We will not actually be doing any journal writing in this class, but the book will be a perfect ready journal for you to use at your home.

a little to the left.....and, i feel funny inside.....

ever feel a little scrambled up?  head a bit like a cotton ball?  looking for clarity and can't find it?  a few years ago i took a class by theo ellsworth at artfest.  love that guy.  he had cut out these head shapes and then prompted us to use our imaginations.  at one point he suggested we draw with our opposite hand.  for me that is my left hand.  we were to learn to not fear our own imagination; to just let them rip.......-- my imagination, hand and pen did things on their own.  they did not wait for me, my instructional over thinking self, to catch them.    from random lines came houses, the alphabet, roads, maps, lots of stuff cramped into the head and shoulder space.   i felt totally free because i was not using my drawing hand.  therefore i was not using my mentally controlled hand.   try it sometime.   it has a surprising effect, both in actual practice as in the drawing experience and in looking inside yourself.  things lurk in there that you had no idea could be there.
the results of this drawing session were a total surprise to me.  imagine that.

my daughter rosie, age 6....

i am getting ready to finish this assignment since the deadline is tomorrow.
for this piece, which looks a bit like a maxfield parrish print because the shadows are soft.
i used tints of colors, starting with yellow as the entire underlying color.  then adding robin's egg to background and after trying many different tries, i came up with this format.  under paint in yellow, then cover up most the background in robin egg turquoise.  next add some pinks.  then some more light blue - oh yeah - there was black underneath too.  later, i will make the features a bit more clear by using a fine brush.

At the bard hall show......

Thank you all who came out to the artist reception last wednesday in the downpour.  i understand a small tornado touched down in hillcrest that night which ruined all the traffic lights in the hood.  its totally unheard of in our area to have a tornado - of course it had to happen the night of the show and right in the neighborhood of the show!
nevertheless people came while i almost didn't come!
i made some new friends, including richard who took this picture.  thank you, richard.  I didn't even notice you taking it.  also it was so fun that night to do some impromptu ATCs for the ATC show next month.
************
i just got back from the anaheim convention center - the CHA supershow.  I was on the internet streaming "pajama party" last night which was a blast.  (note to self:  must learn to look into the camera).
then tonight i appeared as a "celebrity" artist for the scrapbook royalty fund raiser and auction.  i donated 3 paintings that appeared with my article "colors of vintage" for somerset gallery magazine.  i hope the new owners contact me to tell me that they have my art.  i always like to know where my work ends up living.  i don't always get to know who has what - but when i do, i give a quiet little wish for my art to love its new home.
my paintings for the article where of old vintage photos that i painted in bright colors like pink and yellows - my point was - vintage images don't always have to be sepia or black and white.   i loved the brighter colors because although the photos of the time were not in color, the reality was there was color in their dresses, hats, cheeks and backgrounds, etc..  i just don't feel inclined to continue with faded colors for an aged appearance - the brighter colored ones translated vintage just the same.  here are some of them.

st. hildegard of bingen...

St. Hildegarde is the last saint of 12 saint i created for a cool project.

i have been involved in 12 person collaborative initiated by artist Laura Mika.   It is called the Patron Saints Project.  We each created a book of our chosen saint.  (mine was Saint Rita of Cascia, in Umbra, Italy --- the saint my sister in law was named after).   After creating our books we forwarded them to the person next to us in a number line that Laura created.  so, each month i received a book from lisa guerin who received one from karen o'brien who received one from someone else maybe she got hers from laura, herself.  i send my book each month to josie rodriguez.   we each look up the attributes of the particular saint of the month and interpret to paint, collage or whatever our saint for the month, creating a leaf for the participants book..  it was fun learning the various attributes and dreaming up the saint.
for instance it was said that st. rita had white bees coming from her mouth as a baby, she was so pure......roses and marriage are also symbols for her healing traits.
st. hildegrade is patron saint of libraries and language.  this is why i have her submerged in words.
i will get my book back next month.  the project will be finished.  i can't wait to see all the wonderful art  done by my collaborative colleagues.

once upon a time in Paris......

last year in march, renee richetts and i held a workshop in Paris - it was a total dream come true, heavenly actually- and to top that off, it was totally affordable.  yep, renee organized the event, she rented a massive house in the most trendy part of Paris a 1/2 block from the Pompidou Museum and cultural district - renee, me and my family plus 12 others met in Paris and had a workshop plus art seeing trip together.   i taught paintovers and renee taught 3 -d art (which i thought was totally awesome).  it was amazing and a great time of year to travel there, as it happens
so,  if you are interested in reading about it--- then pick up the next issue of Somerset Studio Memories.  I wrote an article about it.
So what about this painting?    well, this is from a photo of  the grandfolks of artist and attendee, Linda Demascos Weber from Chicago.  I used the image to demonstrate the paintover technique - using a large brush (acrylics) and to paint rapidly.  later, i applied the stamped images .  More on that later...

3 fish....

this could easily be a Christain painting - the three fish.  i love to include fish into my work whenever i can.
those who know me know that i will use the fish as a way to get around artist's block.  have you ever gotten just so far into your work and realized you don't know what to do next, something seems to be missing?  when that happens to me, i have a few tricks.  my favorite trick is to use a fish image.  i love it.  especially when it is random.  if you happen to look at my website (www.lisabebiart.com)- you might recognize the paintings where i had this issue.  one of my favorite of all time paintings was of this tough guy leaning against a wall - he was painted in greens and reds (it was xmas time) and i had nothing else.  i placed a fish leaning against the wall next to him -like a couple bad boys.  i named it "happy chris and his fish" - or happy christfish  - it was my xmas painting and it sold immediately.  i wonder who bought that..... as i wonder most of he time who buys and why.
clearly the day i painted this one - i had no idea what to use as a subject matter.
other ways to conquer "block" is to ask a friend (who is an artist).  really, uhm,  a husband or loved one doesn't work that well for this trick.  they will say the most boring things (sorry baby) - because probably it will be the first thing that comes to mind for them and just by the nature of first thoughts - it will be trite and unimaginative.  artists are special people - generally, just saying.  well,  my friends at least, don't think inside the box.  they may think of the trite answer first, but they know better than to say it out loud.
but some of my friends, truly the first ting that comes to mind will be off the wall.   soem people might call them KooKoo, but.... love you guys, you know who you are.
a third way to overcome block is to pick a subject out of a hat  (pre-make ideas and put them in your hat, of course) or flip through a magazine and look for images that have something in common with your piece that is not obvious.
for instance, if you look at an earlier post (below) you will see what i mean by finding usual combinations--  the aloe plant reminded me of the letter "y".  it could have just as easily reminded me of a crown, glass shards,  flower petal points, funky hair,  the number one- repeated or even the letter "w",  etc.
some artists say they look at other artists' artwork.  personally, i steer clear of that because i don't want to have a fight with myself about copying someone else's work.  gives me a headache.  but you could do it if you wanna.  not saying it is wrong.
****
i am happy to say that i will be demo -ing for arnold drummer at CHA this year - an art journal of techniques.  i will be at the pajama party on friday, January 22 (i think) - i will let you know what time and all that as soon as i know.   i heard that some of the demo will go "live" or i will be interviewed.  should be fun.  i will be ready to be interviewed this time - not like the other day when i was putting up my show at Bard Hall.  See youtube post below.   now that interview was spontaneous and was actually done by someone in the show who used her telephone - pretty good results for that, i thought.
and BTW, i just purchased 10 bottles of good wine for the reception next tuesday night!  come on over - its open to the public -see sidebar for details.

my daughter Brooke's dog........

we are babysitting Brooke's (and carlos') dog for a couple of days - so...i thought of writing about him.
so, this is "gracie" who is a boy dog.  she called him "gracie" because he isn't graceful.
gracie is pitbull that my daughter found running around the LA freeway jumping from car to car begging for food.  don't worry, the freeway in LA was doing its usual thing - totally stopped - jammed --not moving.  it was rush hour.  anyway, brooke took in gracie and drove him around town looking for his home, a posted sign or anything.  she saw that he was actually a part of a dumped litter.  he was very skinny and very needy, but sweet.  she took him home and put out a bulletin looking for the owner - nothing.  probably he and his siblings was left out on the freeway as many dogs are - sadly.
brooke, at the time, worked in LA at KNX radio station as a reporter.  so, she looked for stories about the dog - no go.  she wrote a story about the dog or dumped dogs in general - no one claimed him.
brooke  lived in san diego and worked in LA - this meant she traveled daily from san diego to LA and back to san diego again.   that was a lot of time in the car.  and a bit, well, of a hellish commute.
because she was traveling back and forth working fulltime - she could not care for the dog.  so i (well, we - ok, mostly my husband) did.  in fact, we had gracie for over a year.  then brooke finally took gracie home and she and her boyfriend managed to care for him (did a great job too) - eventually she quit her job and stayed here in san diego to pursue a happier lifestyle.  (which is going well - thanks).

we did not train gracie because we believed we were just babysitting him -you know "not our dog".   as time went on he became a little unmanageable.   he was a holy terror, actually.  his insistent barking and jumping at our gate got noticed by the neighborhood.   they began to hate him after he got out of the gate and chased a lady with her tiny yapping dog up the hill and atop a parked car.  (they have no sense of humor---- apparently).
the neighborhood drama continued and, in fact,  still, to this day, is over him.  the lady who lives across the street is a PE teacher.... plenty of  mornings she has used her "bull horn" to announce that our dog woke her up.  (yeah, well, she woke up the rest of the neighborhood with her fricken mouth.  and she was so wrong because taz was in the house - she assumed it was our dog, if it was any dog at all).
heavy sigh.  neighbors.

we found it hard to call a boy dog gracie, so over time, we changed his name to "taz" for tasmanian devil.  it was during this time that i painted his picture.  notice the chaos around him.  yep, that's him.

today he is a fat old dog - looks more like a potbellied pig than dog and doesn't have much "chase" left in him.   he is very content and peaceful and is not in the least bothered with even our cat.

too bad our neighbors have not stopped hating him.   or is it us?
every once in a while i allow taz/gracie outside to bark just to level the field -so to speak.  he is so old now i have to coax and encourage him to bark - really he doesn't care.

i am glad that i captured him in his youth - time does fly, doesn't it?

i'm watching youuuuu...

not really.  i am just popping in here to mention that i plan (at this moment) to be at the second saturday event at the escondido gallery tomorrow night (see my side bar for details) at 5:30 - 7 p.m..  however, my daughter has a long swim meet this weekend - if it goes too long i will be too pooped to go.  so i hope you understand if i don't make it.
plus i am working overtime trying to get all my chapters together for the new book "Art at the Speed of Life" - an ironic title for me .........- or is it?

i'm very proud to be in this book.  BTW

fun with images.....

ever feel a little dull in the brain?  here is an exercise i do to loosen me up and to get thinkin' before a creatin' session.  It is working with unusual associations. Like for example, take this aloe plant.   I saw the form as similar to the shape of the letter "Y".  that is why i place them together.
So here is what I do:
I take magazine images or part images work better-
tear them out of the magazine and place the fragment on an ATC (artist trading card) or larger support - then look at it - without using the literal side of your brain,  look for elements in the subject that others would not associate with immediately.   If it is not form, look for associations with color, texture mood.

its a ton of fun.
I would like to announce that at my show at Bard Hall (January 19, 5:45 p.m.- 9 p.m.)in Hillcrest, we will be looking for others who make ATCs to come in and trade with us.  Your ATCs will be curated and placed in the next show.

"go" bags.......

one day when i had nothing better to do i decided to create bags that were fun to use - the kind of bag i would use at my local Vons instead of using plastic or paper.   i just painted straight on blank canvas bags i bought at JOAnns.

the big white cat was created after a cat we used to have named "bemstein".   the scottish terrier i made because my daughter's high school's mascot is a scottie dog.   i created the small flowery ones for my young stylish daughter, (said high schooler) Rosie, in case she needed to tote some french bread around with her as she walked the streets of Paris on our vacation there.
and the squirrel one i created because squirrels are funny.  don't you think so? even the word squirrel is a weird one.  look at those letters together.  its got a lot of letters from the far end of the alphabet; q, r(s), esses (ok, only one s) and a u.  that is too back-of-the-alphabet heavy.  the word should be better rounded with letters, mixed up front and back, like, maybe,  squabbel or aquaccel or squaccab........i don't know.

so about our cat "bemstein".
bemstein was a big, fat white male cat.  he lived both indoors and out.  he was a mean sucker.  almost as mean as he was fat.  he hated our doberman, dempsey.  just because he was a dog.  prejudice cat.
when we brought dempsey home as a 6 week old pup, (so cute) (dempsey, not the cat) -ok the cat was NOT cute - he was handsome, maybe - but never cute.
anyway.  when we brought dempsey home - the cat learned to love to claw at dempsey; ambush and surprise attack him.  bemstein would lay on a dining room chair where dempsey had to pass him to get his food dish.    bemstein stuck out his claws like a cartoon character would spring open a jack-knife.  his claws would stick into dempsey face and they two would stay like that frozen for 1/2 hour.    we would have to literally unhook bemstein's claws so that everyone could get on with their day.   dempsey never minded it though.  he would do it again.  number 1: sniff the cat (how could he have forgotten already what the cat smelled like?) number two: get stuck with claws in snout.  damn dog.
bemstein had a huge gut.  he was funny to watch walk on the fence.  his belly would sway over one side of the fence then the other as he walked.  i wish i had filmed him, especially from the back.  if i had,  i would have made a background song with a beat  like this: boom -ditty-boom-ditty, there goes the fat kitty.  he always maintained his balance - somehow - and he still could spring up on birds.  he had a very healthy self image.  i tried to learn that from him.

one night i was painting by the slider that leads to our swimming pool.  the screen was open because it was a very hot.   around 10 p.m. i heard a strange noise - i listened harder - it sounded like a rapid scrapping.  i was wondering what our neighbors were doing at that hour - probably some handyman scrapping or sanding the tiles off his roof - damn suburbs.
it kept up...finally after i asked the family if they heard it too and we had a big discussion as to whether i was hearing things or not, then i went out to investigate.  the pool light was on and there in the deep end was that fat cat trying to claw his way out of the pool.  it wasn't working, but i will say this - a big fat dollop of a cat like that, can really float.  he could have just floated on his back and he would have been fine.
anyway,  i felt awful.  i immediately rescued him and wrapped him in a towel.  i was horrified.  how did that happen?  after i dried him off and took him indoors he wriggled free and then paraded around like nothing had happened.   he was completely composed, unfettered of worry, not the least bit embarrassed or ruffled.  i tried to learn that from him too.   he was looking for the dog so that he could play "pin my nails on the dog's face".
thinking it over, i did remember hearing a loud splash  - but i thought the neighborhood kids had thrown another rock in our pool.  although it did sound more like they threw in a watermelon.
when i went outside, at first this is what i saw in the pool light:  a tiny, tiny pin-sized wet cat head (the size of a wet mouse head), then a massive white bellowing out, magnified by water, floaty fur and the pool light, overgrown blown out pufffish.  completely disproportionate and down right comical.
and no wonder he couldn't get out.  he would have needed swartzenhager-like arms for that.

a few days later, my husband and i were sitting out by the pool talking as my husband smoked a huge stoggy (cough, choke, wheeze), when the cat walked by, i guess he got too close to the edge (the cat, not my husband) and kerplunk, he was swimming again.  we couldn't believe.  never had any animal of ours fallen into the pool before - ever.  i think it was the weight of the belly.   he must have swung it over the edge and couldn't get the momentum back.  i fished him out again.  he was not the least upset.  he was one cool, pool, fool cat.

don't worry, he died an old man - had nothing to do with swimming but a bit to do with a coyote.  Oh, bemstein - God keep you well.

and oh, why the name "bemstein"?  well, my husband in those days was in charge of naming the pets.  he always loved vintage boxing.  There was a trainer for Jack Dempsey (our dog's name - see what's happening?) whose name was Whitey Bemstein.  He actually looked like our cat too.  white cat = whitey bemstein.
nowadays our daughter names the animals - that's why our cat is named Miss Dior.
i guess if i were in charge they would have famous artists names like Declaws (degas), Pi-cat-so or meowy monet;  or names of colors like vermillion or cadmium or alizarin.
hummm, i like "alizarin" because the letters in that name are from a good balance of both ends of the alphabet.

the real story of Max and Ruby........

(still have xmas pins left to give away.....)

I made a slew of collage-y pins for xmas this year and then I couldn't stop making them -- they are so much fun to do.  I like to give them out as my way of paying back the goodwill I receive from art lovers all year long.
This year for my art I used three different images taken from my family album.  Two of them are of my mom, Ruby, and one is of my dad, Max.
The first image of my mom is very special to me.  It is one I have used over and over in my art.    Her painted image, in different forms (as well as my dad's) has, on numerous occasions, been published,  juried into shows, won awards and sold to collectors all over the globe.   It makes me laugh that my parents are on walls in living rooms of strangers from all walks of life.  How adventuresome of them.
Ruby in the Car:
She is seated in my dad's yellow convertible.  The car's top is folded down.  She is sporting a large wool coat, her favorite for several years.  They were on their honeymoon and had stopped along California highway 101 somewhere near Santa Barbara.  My mom has a rosy cheeked  shy "almost smile" (like the Mona Lisa)  on her lips - still shy of her new status as wife.  Something about that look and the way she is seated has compelled me to paint her again and again.
I learned their secret eventually after they both died and I looked in the lock-box -- there was a wedding certificate from Mexico dated after my brother's birth.  This honeymoon was premature.  My mom is pregnant, the real wedding took place a few years later.
Often I paint this image as though my mom were flying in the night sky, fast past stars with her hair flowing behind her.  Some titles have been: "Ruby in the Sky", "Red as Ruby", Ruby's Night Ride" and "Ruby's Look".  Each painting is different, a different mood, a different story.
The image of my dad, Max is one i have used often as well.  I always like to use his image because of his serious and rigid stance.  He was in the military (air force) and even years later stood at attention for every photo.  Because of his straight face, stance and his dry wit, I feel compelled to use his image over and again as the "straight man" for my less serious paintings.  Often I have a cone hat on his head or a balloon tied to his belt, a time or two he has sported a curly birthday blow whistle in his mouth.  Sometimes he is floating in the air holding balloon or wearing a whirlybird hat.  Sometimes there is total chaotic madness going on around him yet he stays straight faced and commands a peaceful spot in the riotous painting.   He would have laughed at my painted jokes.  Just not out loud.

Then there is another image of my mom that I used this year - one of her relaxing on a garden lounge chair in her backyard.  She was reading a book and happened to look up out of casual curiosity just as the photo was snapped.   She hardly knows the photo is being taken.   I love this image of her - it is so authentic.  I love snapshots in general for this reason - I love their truth.
Anyway, i have not painted this image in large format yet, but when i do, i will leave her in her chair but make the chair a giant swing from heaven, or perhaps sailing the night sky as though her chair were a sky ship.

Symbols:  My paintings of my parents are always spiritual.   My mom will always represent Madonna and my father is a loyal soldier at the gates of heaven.

My hope is that you will understand my parents as symbols of those we love (universally) and long to be with during the holiday season - those with kindred spirits of love, happiness and peace.
God Bless.  Lisa Bebi
If you would like a pin - you may have one for free while they last by emailing me your mailing address:  lisabebiart@aol.com  I still have a couple hundred left.
