still no photo - i'm so sorry. still working on it. i guess i better get one of those iphones or other modern contraptions that uploads photos instantly and magically.
its a project to adjust to jet lag no matter how much you will yourself to stay awake to acclimate- the body defeats the will.
it was chilly yesterday but we bundled up nicely and headed out. we got as far as 6 blocks away before we just had to eat something. i think it was as much to do with the lovely lunchtime aromas encircling our heads as anything. i noticed the aromas visually turned itself into a misty hand with a "come here" finger calling us, myself. you might think that only happens in cartoons, but no, it happened on rue marquette today at about 1 p.m. so into cafe michaels we went. my daughter and husband had muscles in a beautiful white wine garlic sauce - a whole pot of it each with french fries. (the real kind). i ordered a beefstek (i think its spelled) - bad idea. it had the tenderness of a deflated soccer ball. oh well. still the wine was good.
then that nasty jetlag reappeared. dang. we had to turn back and sleep. so much for our exploring.
tomorrow is the beginning of the workshops - fortunately museums stay open until 9 p.m. so we will have time right after our sessions to go scout some more. past cafe michaels is what i am hoping for.
meanwhile i am awake here at 4 a.m. munching on fresh bread and butter and sipping red wine. yummm, ok now we' re talking. that's the delicacy i am talking about. i could live on bread, butter and wine and maybe a chesse or two.

in paris.....
sorry there is no picture here. i haven't figured out how to post images yet since this is not my laptop.
i just wanted everyone to know that the flight went without a hitch - smooth from home and in chicago -at the connection. i expected the airports to be crowded with holiday travelers but it was the opposite. quiet. and easy. personally i slept almost the whole way - not my family though. now there is jetlag to pay. aw, can't be helped.
it was so wonderful flying in and seeing paris under a blanket of snow - all uniformed looking, like a white frosted cake. the airport arrivals section and customs area were all hushed too to match the padded looking scenery.
we caught a taxi - a spanking brand new mercedes van with an up to date GPS. it got us to our apartment swiftly. we had a contest in the van - who ever spotted the eiffle tower first won. my daughter won...it was not obvious hidden in the grey sky. but i was first to see sacred coeure - it was sparkling as if the sun spotlighted it as a welcoming beacon. our apartment near the foot of it.
we found renee and maryjo in the apartment already - with the heaters on full blast. that was nice. the apartment is so funky and artsy - for instance we have a massive skylight in our bedroom. that's romantic and with a candle chandlier - perfect since this is our wedding anniversary.
we made a quick walking tour of the area to buy fresh bread, cheese, and wine. caught up on each others news and then crashed. pam carriker came by the apartment at 4 pm as we had previously planned but we were all dead to the world. she understood, she's a sweetpie. we will meet in the morning and get orgainzed. her apartment with her family is only around the corner from us.
time to sleep now (again) - tomorrow will be a day to get organized. and to really scout around.
maybe i will figure out how to get my own computer up and running so that i can show you photos. fingers crossed.

daily painting...champ elyesse
i am not sure if i can post my art from paris since i don't have a scanner there...we will see.
anyway, here is the last one - we leave in the morning.
daily painting...eiffle christmas day
i couldn't wish you all a merry christmas without another tip of the hat to the beautiful eiffle tower.
co-workshop instructor, pam carriker, is already in paris with her family (get this: - her husband flew the plane there!!! OK so he is a pilot for a major airlines, but still)
anyway, she says it's a snowy white paris christmas (or xmas eve, as it were). they enjoyed fine dining on this eve. i can almost taste it now.
about eats:
my husband and 16 year old daughter, surprisingly if you ask me, both are looking forward to eating goose pate. i didn't try it last time and it sort of gags me to think about it. they LOVED it. well, obviously.
personally, i am really looking forward to eating a crepe on the street near the moulin rouge - a grand marier crepe suzette with tangerine zest - flamebeed. that will be after i have had my fill of nutella crepes. with banana.
so Merry Christmas everyone. i just know you are having a nice one.

daily painting......down the lit stairs
so guess where this is....well, i think it is very near our workshop location. near sacred heart. on the hill. steep hill. on foot. in the cold and wet. wearing big boots and heavy wool coat. and head scarf. and maybe carrying an umbrella and a bag of fresh bread. and maybe some fancy gloves too the ones i painted yesterday. i will have full hands but, hopefully not full with our suitcases. that would be a drag. i could see it now - my suitcase would be the one that escapes and bumps and tumbles down this hill for 10 minutes, gathering speed and only stopping to rest inside the metro tunnel.
so what do i think of that? i LOVE it - give me bad weather, and snow and hills and tumbling suitcases.....i'm a fool for paris. afterall.
we leave sunday!
example of "oversaturated polaroid look" technique.
actually i used this method on my lit stairs piece above. too.

daily painting.......paris ferris
this painting...such as it is........this is what happens when you go out for mexican food and have a swimming pool sized margarita.....here i sit at 4:30 am trying to get my daily painting up. makes no sense...but there it is.
as i research paris for things to paint i realize they have a lot of carousels and amusement park features. when i think of paris i think of the heavy, bulky architecture as in the hotel deville, or the bridges over the seine or boulevards cut out of the cement city in a kind of snail pattern....i don't think of carousels first off. or a ferriswheels for that matter.
i will make a point of visiting these things of joyful amusement, past-times, curiosities...imagine your city having several carousels sprinkled here and there, one more ornate than the last. sure, we have parks in our cities with beautiful trees, grass, benches, swing-sets.......but how about a ferriswheel or carousel right in front of a department store or hotel? or an ice rink for the public to use?maybe its just my city. i know chicago has its (the original) ferriswheel and london theirs. its not the same as it is in paris though-where it seems the amusements are seamlessly part of the city as natural as sidewalks.
we will be staying near the moulin rouge - that's a whole other kind of amusement...still, its so classy, unlike a seedy downtown district.
i'm just musing at now 4:40 a.m.
ok back to bed for me.

daily painting......carousel near eiffle tower, paris
this was a fun one to paint - love the bright colors and the purple-y night sky. i think what we would find at the bottom of the carousel would be lots of snow. cold and snow. oh boy. i only hope our plane lands on schedule or even lands at all.
i bought some wool socks today. i also bought "cuddle duds" - satiny long underwear. i'm excited to wear them - i know that sounds weird, but it's true. i am thinking of putting them on right now as a matter of fact. as pajamas.
i hope there are no seams in them - i hate seams in pajamas.
if i wear them, i will wear them inside out so i won't be bugged by the seams.
i wear lots of stuff inside out. mostly the clothes that i paint in. i rather do that than wear an apron. i guess because i don't like that tight feel of the apron strings around my middle.i think my local vons store staff is used to seeing me with my clothes inside out by now. i have only been showing up there like that for about 20 years. i forget to change them right side out. then there the acrylic painted face i always have. not to mention my hands and nails.
those are always covered in bright tones.
so how did i get from the paris carousel to talking about my long underwear and painted face? i have no idea. i feel as though i have been on that carousel for years on end. that might explain why i' m always disoriented.

daily painting.....above the seine
this is from my friends photo. she let me use her paris pictures -she is a pro photographer. so nice and generous of her. i tried to do the oversaturated look here but missed the mark a bit. the boat and river look odd. also i think i used too many colors. the hookers green on the tree of the bank looks wrong. i feel bad because her photos are so nice. i feel like a kid who takes a crayon and scribbles over pages in a coloring book instead of carefully coloring them. i used to bug the heck out of my brother when we were small - always a scribble mark here and there on his books. i would never let my kids do that - BTW.
maybe i will try this one again - and use less colors.
so, last nigh my husband and i stayed at a resort here in san diego called paradise pointe. i get mixed up and call it pleasure pointe sometimes- and that just sounds wrong.
anyway, it really is a paradise...driving into the resort ---it looks enchanting with trees lit in chrismas lights. the trees line the way in for a long while deep into the resort. then we ate at the baleen which is a fancy restaurant right on the bay. last night was the parade of lights on the bay, so i was completely amused (clapping hands) as each boat went by. so cool. the the room was a bungalow. big room, big enough to have a good size party in. in fact the bed looked out of place in the room - although its was a california king sized bed it looked lost. i have always wanted to spend the night at vacation village now paradise pointe since i was a little girl. i remember it being built! it was close to the opening of sea world. i remember when sea world was built too.
so now i want to hold an artist retreat there. it's a perfect place for a retreat. we can all drink and stumble to our bungalows without care.
so thank you so much danea and keith - it was beautiful. a dream come true.

daily painting---along the bank
i don't have a lot of time tonight since my husband and i are going out. my friend, d, gave us an evening out for my bday. that was generous.
this piece is from another (new) friend of mine named katie - i am going to paint it soon but from now i had to do it sparsely with only a little paint and some inks.
smiling big for my night out....
daily painting...shakespeare bookstore paris
when my oldest daugther, brooke was pretty young - about 18 years old, she traveled by herself through europe - working wherever she could. when she got to paris she stayed and worked for the owner of the shakespeare bookstore. she had to work as a painter for her keep. a wall painter that is. i don't remember how long she managed to stay there. it didn't seem too long - maybe a month. she loves loves loves to read - so this was a perfect place for her to stay. it was full of other young travelers too she said. i guess it is a "sortof" youth hostel. she later decided she didn't really like it so much in paris. she said the parisian men were mean and interfering and flirty. i believe here is a story of where she got into a fist fight with one of them. that's my brooke.
anyway, she ventured on to gibraltar - "the rock", and worked for a man who owned a large fishing vessel. i believe she worked as bartender even though she was totally under age and didn't know the first thing about mixing drinks. and unbelievably that was her longest gig. she had tons of great stories to tell me when she got home - one of my favorites is the time she was chased up the shear rock by some pesty monkeys.
maybe she will read this and tell her stories here. i hope i hope i hope.

daily painting..latin quarter rain
i am so tired i can hardly keep my eyes open. this one is after my long all day bday celebration.
so, i am not completely happy with it - maybe i will do it again in the morning.
nighty night. (yawn).
daily painting...happy birthday to me!
(french socialite dog at elegant birthday party near the latin quarter, somewhere)
happy birthday to me. happy birthday to MEEEEEeeeeee. yes it's my birthday. and i would like to celebrate it loudly. i'm breaking out the karaoke machine that i bought my daugther when she was 10. i'm putting on a party hat and blowing a curling whistle. all day long.
i'm gonna tell everyone its my birthday.....even strangers like the butcher in the grocery store, the welcome man at costco, the mailman, the neighbor's gardeners - even the gardeners who belong to the neighbors that i don't like who live across the street. i might ask to borrow their megaphone that they like to use on us at 6 a.m. to tell us our dog is barking. (which is never true). i will use the megaphone to announce my brithday to them from my rooftop. upwind. and tell them they are not invited to my house to celebrate with me. but they are welcome to leave a present on my doorstep. (not an explosive one).
i might go to the post office and tell them too. cuz they should know. this is after i tell all my relatives. and my friends since kindergarden. maybe even old boyfriends or an ex husband. nah. that could be a downer.
i'll celebrate with just everyone, anyone and no one in particular. i will celebrate with the butterflies and songbirds in my garden.
i might bang pots at midnight - set off fireworks. bring in a band. hire the rockettes to come over and entertain the family. create a parade. conduct an orchestra. build a float. build a birthday cake. smoke a cigar and drink scotch, bourbon, and cognac. turn the music up full blast. on the oldies station. and later drunk dial old friends and slur affection their way. i might even call my brother, if he doesn't call me first.
i might dress in elegant, vintage clothes and wear a plume hat. and smoke from a long cigarette holder. while wearing gloves - long white ones, of course. wearing a large diamond ring on the outside. i might fancy wearing a string of long pearls or a diamond choker and perhaps a lovely white feather boa.
i will twirl in a full dress and throw my hat in the air like mary tyler moore. she always looked happy. maybe i should invite her over.
i will dance with my cat. only cuz my dog is a bit grumpy. i will string party lights up in my studio. turquoise ones. and hang a few balloons.
yep i'm gonna enjoy my birthday. and then i will have the nicest, deepest sleep. with wonderful dreams. under my electric blanket. while wearing my favorite flannel PJs.

daily painting...mon chere and the russian wolf hound....
hardly a chic- er looking beast to accompany a lovely french model.
the russian wolf hound - what a beauty. and so is the model.
daily painting...french country road
i can hear the rattle and sighs of the old cart as it ambles down the path. maybe the cart is used to deliver eggs or bread or milk. maybe its the cart the farmer and his wife take to town. what would they be going in town to do? stop at a confectioners shop? fabric shop so she can sew wintery clothes for their new infant? goods? shoes? clogs? maybe they are going to a neigbors house to trade a pig for a goat.
or maybe its xmas morning and they are traveling to be with family.
i think i smell lavender fields just around the corner.

From Lisa:
"One of the most liberating experiences to me is art journaling. Art journaling allows me to forget myself and let the creative energy of the universe flow through my fingers onto pages and pages. It gets filled with unspoken delight because it is a place where color, emotion, words, abstractions can spew forth without the hindrance of forethought or self control.
It is also a cool place to learn and try out new techniques to add to my artist arsenal. So come explore with me. Sometimes you need to let go in order to expand and find yourself."

daily painting...les miserables....
or other urchins of the village in vintage paris. i like to try to capture a mood. this mood is dreariness, hunger and hope mixed up together.

daily painting...fresh croissants
nothing is nicer than a brisk morning walk to the nearby bakery - smell. then bring home the goods and have coffee with friends.
daily painting....man on a bridge
i don't know where in paris this is but its a rainy day, dark and lonely. perhaps this man is worried about his wife's prognosis. or perhaps his own. its a subdued sort of worry.

daily painting - edwardian winter
i always have liked wintery roads and passage ways. this painting sounds like muted quiet - maybe distant dog barking.

daily painting -simply dior!
this is one of my favorites. i really enjoyed painting her tonight.
dior - fashion - paris - it all goes together so well. very small palette tonight - bluish lavender and mustard seed with a tiny bit of cream. elegance and painterly-ness together. that is what i like best.

daily painting...girls chat after work, paris
i imagine these women were thought to be very forward, sitting in an outdoor bistro terrace in the evening unescorted-smoking and drinking cocktails - perhaps just after work.
at least i imagine that that is what american women thought of french women and european women - thought french were more sophisticated, less inhabited, more independent. i think they are from the 1930's. the era of intellectuals and artists.
Paris in the 1950's was revered to be the capitol and magnet of modern and forward thinkers. the top of the charts in social, intellectual, cultural and artistic achievements. It was the postwar era - the city had become flush with money from "culture- seeking" tourists and expatriates. also the fashion industry took off with the help of christen dior and the like. american women wanted to not only gain prestige by visiting paris or dressing like she had, they sometimes talked like it too. i remember watching old black and white movies and hearing actresses speaking in an accent. the accent was mid-atlantic. neither here nor there. like katherine hepburn. i always thought kathleen turner, ( not really a product of that time period but this topic made me think of her). for instance, had a strange unidentifiable accent - (i don't know maybe hers was real). i say had because she doesn't sound like that anymore.
so, how is it that i'm suddenly the queen reporter of history about paris?
i just know. ok?
well truthfully i only know this because i have read about it and i have watch lots and lots of "leave it to beaver". "leave it beaver" is responsible for instilling in me a grounded impression of what a woman's role is. the idealistically characterized mrs. cleaver seemed real to me. i believed in her. she was a perfect role model. i couldn't understand why my own mom was not like her. (nor did my mom act like she was french, BTW. there was no strange french accent for her. however she did act and dress like she was a movie star).
so there was a big contrast between how moms behaved here and moms there. the movie "american in paris" struck me as promiscuous and naughty. but it made me stand up and listen. oh i understated. it was a shocking contrast actually.
yet fascinating.
i doubt mrs. clever (or even mrs. billingsly) went out with her friends in the evening and smoked, had cocktails and talked about art. mrs. cleaver was well mannered and punctual. she spent all her time at home washing dishes, preparing dinner for her family, vacuuming in heels, baking cookies and parceling out common sense tidbits to neighbors and neighborhood young thugs. well, possible thugs. ok just eddie haskel.
did mrs. cleaver want to visit paris? without mr. cleaver, wally and the beaver? doubtful. but wouldn't it have been funny to have spotted her there with her hair down getting plastered in public, reeking of cigarette smoke and laughing with her head thrown back. i like to think about that. these thoughts keep me busy.
well i say me, but i really mean my muse.

daily painting..place du terte....
"S Wonderful, S Marvelous.........place du terte (montemarte) the touristy street art show, jammed pack with art works and artists still wearing tams, offering to sketch your portrait right then to gathering crowds of tourists. it is also where the movie "American in Paris" centered itself. and this, my dears, is were our workshop will be held in our rented apartment ---amidst the lively and exciting arts district. at the "place du terte", we will be staying in a house (apartment) in this square-- near where picasso and other famous artists lived.
a winter scene with snow on the ground. romantic, right?
always for me.
so i have to say that "my love is here to stay".
i am limbering up for our cancan night and now our leslie caron/gene kelly choreographied night.
it will no doubt be beyond our capabilities to include a "nicole kidman sort of number" that she danced in the movie moulin rouge. however , i confess, i will be on the lookout for some of her exotic and sexy outfits.

daily painting..roadside cafe
i initially wanted to paint this piece for its shapes and to play with color. then i got the overwhelming...no, actually, a compulsion to paint it in these vincent van gogh's cafe terrace at night (1888) colors. do you remember that famous painting? beautiful.
i really don't know when if EVER paris would be this quiet during the day- no foot traffic, cars, horns blaring or people....when i look at this painting i hear silence.
for the diary: spent the day with one of my paris co-teachers, renee richetts. we decide what tools and supplies to bring to paris for the workshop. then we created a silly short movie about it using my photobooth movie application. i was going to upload it to youtube but so far i can't remember how to do that.
we were giddy because we are so excited about our trip.
daily painting -arc de triomphe
(i just wanted to re-post this one)
the last time we had the paris workshop my daughter and husband ventured to see the monument one day while i was teaching. when we got back to the states i was looking through their photos and saw that they were on top of the arc. when i asked how they got there my daughters eyes widened and said "momma it was the most dangerous street i have ever tried to cross". i looked at my husband who was now wearing a gumpy smile - he confessed "er, we didn't know we were suppose to get to the arc by the underground passage - apparently it is illegal to cross the avenue." my daughter then added "the french drivers really like to blare their horns." hmmmmm.
thinking back, i thought they looked a bit flushed when they came back to the apartment that day. and so, now i know.
this is a very quick sketchy little piece - i tried to make the arc de tromphe appear to glow. that was my intention, so i really didn't care too much about the surrounding night. if i paint this again i would spend more time on the rest of the painting - create the shadowy figures in a bit better, etc.
the arc de triomphe was built by napoleon bonaparte in honor of his victories. the 12 main avenues in paris radiate out from it are called the place de l'etoile meaning "star" as that is what it looks like from a bird's eye view.
the avenue des champ elysees is said to be "la plus belle du monde" the most beautiful avenue in the world.
about my daily paintings.....
when i began creating these paintings it was for the purpose of displaying them on my blog and as a personal exercise. however i have been getting requests to purchase them.
so here's the info:
each original painting (signed) is on acid free bristol board, they are sealed with uv protected varnish. they measure (to fit my scanner) approximately 8" x 10" or a little smaller.
they are $100 each.
if you would like to have a signed and numbered print instead it is $35.
to purchase one simply email me lisabebiart@aol.com
i didn't title all of them ..... so just refer to those nameless one(s) you want by their date or your best description. thank you for your interest.

daily painting - paris quasimodo (again)
i guess i'm not over painting old quasimodo. such a handsome dude. he even looks kind, doesn't he?
well, i also love shrek so .....i guess i'm no judge of beauty.
its just so fun to paint and it stretches my imagination.
i will be back to painting wintery paris buildings and other paris beauties soon - this is just a short detour. but honestly i think it is hard to think about paris without giving some sort of wonderful tribute to victor hugo. he was such a brilliant man. maybe i will paint something from les miserables tomorrow night.
but for tonight it had to be done - another hunchback painting. why? because it was time....as victor hugo said..."nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come." Victor Hugo French dramatist, novelist, & poet (1802 - 1885)

daily painting -the hunchback poster
its friday night so i was thinking about movies. i saw this poster of the silent movie classic and i decided it would be fun to paint . i love painting from old black and whites - inventing colors, using lively brushstrokes, etc. fun, fun, fun. still if i did this again i think i would give the hunchback a better "do". this one kinda looks like a russian hat or maybe even a changing of the guard's hat from buckingham palace. so of course i had to look up what those hats are actually called:
The Guards hats are called Bearskins and they weigh 665 grams, some are over 100 years old and passed down in the family.
who knew? oh you did? well, i didn't. and i doubt i will know it by tomorrow, anyway.
short term memory = zero.
so what was i saying? oh yeah. friday night- silent movie- the hunchback poster - i was saying it was fun, fun, fun. to paint. the movie was with lon chaney: here is how it was described:
In fifteenth century Paris, the brother of the archdeacon plots with the gypsy king to foment a peasant revolt. Meanwhile, a freakish hunchback falls in love with the gypsy queen.
sounds so good, i think i will see if i can rent it for tonight.

daily painting- students along the seine
busy young people - probably drawing or writing in their journals.
one thing, they do not look as though they are texting anyone. or are they? now i'm not sure.
we will have a number of young teens at our workshops. i know my daughter is very excited about going to paris again - since our last paris artists workshop (2008) she has taken french in school. she loves it. i am going to enjoy walking around with her as she tells me what she knows of paris. maybe even in french.
i know she will want to shop in the paris january sales. oh boy.

daily painting....vintage vogue in paris
i saw this image/photo of this girl/woman leaping from the curb to the street and wanted to paint her. i think it is a vintage picture from vogue. the area in paris? - hmm, not sure maybe near hotel deville where the is a lot of shopping to be had. or in the latin quarter near hotel sorbonne.
by the way, the big sales event in paris - meaning all of paris is having a ginormous sale in every department across town starts january 6. google it if you don't believe me.
so i am thinking she is headed to her favorite department store on january 6. she's going to be even lighter after she empties her pocketbook at the sales.
luckily for me.. or i should say luckily for my husband, i am not a big shopper.
well, unless its art supplies...or books.
